ABOUT your host, Chandler Harrison ("Harry") Stevens :
Harry helped Hormel Institute at the
University of Minnesota to launch CoNet and the Southern Minnesota Internet Group (smig.net) in
1995. He then entered the Peace
Corps in 1999 and served in Ukraine through 2001, after which he organized Friends of Ukraine. After his post-Katrina Crisis Corps
service in Alabama in September-October 2005, he similarly organized Friends of USA, which is
composed mainly of Returned PCVs (RPCVs) who joined in that PC/CC effort, the
first ever to help in a disaster within the United States rather than in a
developing country elsewhere.
Harry applied his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Georgia Tech, 1956)
and Ph.D. in Economics (MIT, 1967) degrees to becoming a management consultant
in computers (1956- ), an Air Force Officer at the Pentagon computer center
(1957-60), a politician (1962-1970) in Massachusetts, a professor (1969-74) at
RPI and MIT, and an entrepreneur (1970-1999) in founding Participation Systems
Incorporated (1970-1986) and then in co-founding Eventures Limited (1987-1999),
which developed Participate/Parti,
the first commercial computer conferencing software (1980-2002) and media
dialog systems, credited with supporting the biggest upset Congressional
election in 1970 (Father Robert Drinan) and in conducting a Crimean energy dialog on
TV, on radio and in newspapers in Ukraine in 2001.
Dr. Stevens is a husband to one (Joann
Orcutt Stevens), a father to two (Emily
Joan Stevens and Maria Stevens
Bollinger), a grandfather to one (Dexter Michael Stevens Skahill) and a
co-moderator of Yahoo Groups for Sister Colleges in the US
& Ukraine, Friends
