About English Summer School

The Kyiv Mohila Academy Summer School (referred to as a camp by some students, because "no homework") is a two-week immersion in the English Language. A variety of stimulating subjects are taught by native English speakers to mostly university-level students with high-intermediate English-speaking skills. The school focuses on creative and critical thinking and discussion skills. An innovative schedule allows students intensive time in two subject areas for four-day rotations. Some examples of subjects taught are Computer Applications, Environmental Studies, Economics, American Literature and Culture, American Cinema and American televison programming. Classes are interactive and small to allow individual attention. There are opportunities for enrichment activities outside of the classroom, such as Jazz Dance, Sports or Environmental Monitoring. Most teachers are volunteers for the United States Peace Corps, an organization which sends English teachers, business facilitators and educators, and specialists in Environmental Protection to Ukraine and to approximately 90 other countries in the world. The Summer School was initiated in part by funding from a Small Project Assistance program. Students came away from this two-week immersion experience with improved discussion skills, a larger vocabulary, and an excitement to learn about subjects outside their own fields.

For those interested in replicating this type of school/camp or in participating in future schools/camps, here is how this two-week experience is organized. There are three trimesters of four days each. Each of six groups of about ten students -- for a total of approximately 60 students, divided on this webpage into two-group pairs (A-B, C-D and E-F) -- meet with four teachers, again in pairs of two, for two paired sessions of an hour and 20 minutes each. (A larger number of teachers are listed because a few participated during one week only.) The 80-minutes amount of time in university schedules here happens also to be called a "pair".

The teaching schedule consists of two morning pairs and two afternoon pairs as follows:

I. 9-10:20

II. 10:30-11:50

Lunch. 12-1:20

III. 1:30-2:50

IV. 3-4:20

Each pair of teachers meet two paired groups back to back either in the morning or in the afternoon.

Each teacher is paired with another teacher according to theme. The classroom organization depends on six themes of American cinema, television, culture, economics, ecology and computers. In some cases paired groups meet with paired teachers as 20 students, whereas others may meet in groups of ten with a teacher separately and then switch teachers for the second period. In the three four-day trimesters (with a single day off, Sunday, midway in the middle trimester), the student groups cover all six subjects. Links among subjects are acheived in various ways. For example, the computer classes learn how to do Internet searches and then find Internet answers to questions raised during their cinema and ecology classes. Also, progress occurs during the overall course of the three trimesters. For example, this webpage was progressively developed by the groups. Groups A & B developed the overall idea for this webpage, while groups E and F next developed this webpage's graphics and design, and groups C & D, consisting respectively of younger students in C and university graduates in D, completed what the university students of groups A, B, E and F had started. Two specialists emerged, as listed in the copyright below.
